Kids Room: Artwork

Oct 4 2010

Art is such a personal thing. As I’ve mentioned before, when I love a piece, I fall instantly. I’d choose any of these prints for my daughter’s room (in fact, I’ve already taken the plunge on a few):

Below: I bought Rachel Castle’s Bloom print for my daughter. I framed it in a simple white wood shadow-box frame. I picked up this piece long before I’d bought any furniture for our new place and I’m so happy that I did. It makes me smile whenever I look at it.

Above: Bloom, Zebra, and Happy Love prints by Rachel Castle.

Below: It’s hard to decide which print I like most by graphic designer and illustrator, Blanca Gomez. Here’s a peek of just a few that I love.

Above: Rain Prints for Garabat exhibit, New York print from the Illustrated Cities series, and an untitled print.

Below: As you might know, I have a soft spot for photography. And I’m not just talking about taking pictures. I’ve been sketching cameras in one form or another since I was a kid. So when I spotted these illustrations by Yellow Owl Workshop, I had to smile (and buy!).

Frame It

Artwork adds instant character to a home, in my opinion. I’ve been noticing some really fabulous ways to display collections. Here are a few:

California Dreamin’

On such a dreary day, what a treat to discover the fabulous artwork by San Francisco artist Chloe Fleury (via Design Work Life). They are three dimensional and so unique. Each print shows a different SF neighbourhood. I now love the Mission District even more!

Clip Art

Dec 13 2009

When I love a piece of art, I fall instantly. It’s strange really, considering I’ve been known to stagger with simple choices like ordering at a restaurant or picking an evening venue. But if I see a piece of artwork that I love, I start scheming for ways to make it mine or at least visit it as often as possible (ah, thank you, Andreas Gursky).

Recently, I was dropping off some rugs at Hollace Cluny. If you haven’t visited their store on 1070 Yonge Street in Toronto, please do. Owner Susan Fowlie has a knack for finding pieces to inspire. It was there that I fell for the Big Scissor Print by Alanna Cavanagh. It’s often the simplest images that I gravitate towards most. Lately I’ve had a tendency to add too much detail and this image reminded me the power of pairing back. Fitting, I suppose, that I fell for a pair of scissors.
