I thought it was fitting to wrap up my “lessons learned” posts with a few words about rugs. Now, I happen to design and sell rugs, but building this home was my first REAL experience living with my own pieces. Sure I’ve had pieces here and there, but I’ve never done an entire house and I’ve never designed rugs specifically for myself. This time I did and I’m pretty thrilled with how it all turned out. But I’ve learned along the way and still have a long way to go.
So, here are my take-aways (so far):
1) Get a runner!
I think the runner is one of the most under-utilized design accessories. Seriously! I have a 15 ft runner downstairs and another 10 ft piece upstairs. These pieces instantly brought our space to life.
Now – this is not intended as an infomercial for my own stuff. You can get whatever you want wherever you want. But, I think if you think of runners like accessories the way that you’d think about adding a scarf to your outfit, etc…you’ll find so many spots to use them. They’re fun and non-commital. Need I say more?
2) Round Up
I love the carpet in my bedroom. It’s one of my “dune” bamboo silk rugs. It’s amazing on my feet when I get out of bed in the morning and I like that it’s all one colour – although the colour does look different at different angles. But, I wish it were bigger. Quite a bit bigger. It would have filled out the room better and would have made it warmer.
3) Mix it Up
We have a dark walk-in-closet area with very little detail. So I think the antique kilim that we have instantly changes the mood. It warms things up, it creates a more intimate feel. I love the mix of old and new and I really love the bits of pink in this particular rug. I tried several different pieces here before landing on this one. I tried some modern pieces, monochrome, really bright rugs…but the kilim is the one that fit best. It’s a totally different feel than the rest of the house, but works because of this contrast.
